Subject: | Local Funding Options for Transportation |
Ever-increasing tolls and dwindling gas tax revenues have left Pennsylvania’s roads and bridges chronically underfunded and in dire need of repair. This state of affairs is compounded by the projection that our state’s population will grow by approximately 2.5 million people over the next 20 years.[1] The burden of ensuring that Pennsylvania’s transportation infrastructure can support such growth falls on our most populous counties. As local governments have a firm grasp on the revenues needed to build, maintain, and repair their transportation systems, they should be given the ability to establish local solutions. My legislation would accomplish this by allowing a limited number of counties (Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, and Philadelphia) to levy and collect three additional local taxes to fund transportation projects. These taxes are optional and could only be implemented by certain counties through the adoption of an ordinance or resolution. Granting Pennsylvania’s most populous counties the freedom to adequately fund their transportation infrastructure is essential for their economic growth and that of our state. Please join me in providing them with additional options to fund transportation projects of local importance by signing on to this proposal. |
