| Subject: | Establishing September 15 as “Roberto Clemente Day” |
| On August 18, 1934, Roberto Enrique Clemente Walker was born in Barrio San Antón, Carolina, Puerto Rico. A gifted athlete, Clemente excelled at baseball and signed to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. After a season in the minor leagues, Clemente joined the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he spent the remainder of his 18-year career. During his Major League Baseball career, Clemente was a 15-time all-star, a 12-time Gold Glove Award winner in right field, the 1966 National League Most Valuable Player, and a four-time batting champion. Additionally, he accumulated exactly 3,000 hits and two World Series titles. In addition, during the the 1958-59 off season Clemente enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and served until 1964. Tragically, Clemente died in a plane crash off the coast of Puerto Rico at just 38 years old. A recognized humanitarian, Clemente was on board transporting a shipment of supplies to earthquake-devastated Nicaragua. Following the tragedy, the Baseball Writers Association of America waived the required five-year waiting period and elected Clemente to the Baseball Hall of Fame. To honor the life and legacy of Roberto Clemente, we are introducing a resolution to recognize September 15, 2023, as “Roberto Clemente Day” in Pennsylvania. Major League Baseball recognizes this date to honor Clemente, coinciding with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. Please join us in supporting this important resolution to honor and commemorate Roberto Clemente, a beloved humanitarian, athlete, and veteran. Thank you for your consideration. |
