Subject: | Resolution – Recognizing the 32nd Anniversary of the Adoption of the 17 Principles of Environmental Justice |
Thirty-two years ago, during the week of October 24-27, 1991, the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit was held in Washington, D.C. It was there that the 17 principles of Environmental Justice were adopted. These principles laid the foundation for a movement that would bring attention to environmental racism and justice in the three decades since the Summit. In recognition of this momentous event, we will be introducing a concurrent resolution recognizing the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the 17 principles of Environmental Justice and the birth of a grassroots movement. The Summit was the beginning of a movement that was based on a fundamental belief that the earth is sacred and should be treated as such and that all people, regardless of their status or skin color, should be entitled to a clean, safe, and healthy environment. Please join us in support of this important resolution. |
