Subject: | Property Tax Rent Rebate/Social Security COLA Moratoriums (former HB 1065) |
Recently, the Social Security Administration approved an 8.7% cost-of-living increase for those receiving social security benefits. While this COLA will certainly be a welcome relief for many, especially in the high inflationary periods that we’re currently experiencing, it may also prevent individuals from qualifying for much-needed property tax or rent rebate assistance by putting them over the statutorily imposed income eligibility limits. As such, I will be reintroducing legislation that would reinstate a Social Security COLA moratorium to our Senior Citizens Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program. Many of you may recall the moratorium that the General Assembly passed unanimously in 2013, becoming Act 156 of 2014 with Governor Corbett’s signature. Unfortunately, the moratorium has since expired. My bill will reinstate the moratorium through December 31, 2024. In these tough economic times, this legislation will continue to fight the rising cost of property tax by helping to ensure that those individuals who have worked all their lives and contributed to the economy and are now on fixed incomes are not inadvertently penalized to the point of losing much needed benefits that help to maintain their independence and dignity. Please join me in supporting our senior citizens. |
