Subject: Supporting Pennsylvania's Jurors - Two Bill Package

Jurors are the backbone of the administration of justice.

While juries are rooted in the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215, the broad concept of juries can be traced back to ancient Greece.  As such, throughout recorded human history, jurors have served as a pillar of the rule of law.

Currently, any of our constituents who are summoned for jury duty are stepping up to fulfill their civic responsibility, but in doing so, many of them are forced to suffer financial losses as they are often required to forgo their daily wages and pay for parking at the courthouse.

In order to bolster our system of justice, I believe it is imperative that prospective jurors be reimbursed for certain expenses while also receiving fair compensation for their service. As such, I am introducing two bills:

  • The first bill would require compensation for employees summoned to jury duty.

  • The second bill would provide those summoned for jury duty with free parking during their service.

Throughout my tenure as a legislator, constituents have confided in me that serving on a jury has been a rewarding and enlightening experience and provided them a window into the proceedings of our legal system.

Enactment of these two measures will facilitate this opportunity for more individuals, while also strengthening the current legal system.

Please join me in supporting our constituents and investing in the judicial system of our Commonwealth.

Introduced as HB468
