|Safe Drinking Water
|Each day, we drink tap water, trusting that it is clean and safe. Unfortunately, far too often that is not the case. It has become increasingly aware that the public water sources that we have trusted for so long contain toxins that are detrimental to our health and safety. The very water that gives us life may also be filled with carcinogens or other harmful substances that can make the residents of our communities sick.
In an effort to address this issue, I will be introducing legislation that would direct the Environmental Quality Board (EQB) to establish statewide maximum contaminant levels for carcinogens and other harmful pollutants found in drinking water systems which would not exceed the levels promulgated by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. In determining appropriate maximum contaminant levels, the EQB would be required to review studies and evidence used by other states in creating their own acceptable levels for pollutants in drinking water systems. Furthermore, on an annual basis, the EQB would be tasked with determining whether maximum contaminant levels should be adjusted based on the latest peer-reviewed science and studies conducted by independent organizations and government agencies.
As elected officials of this Commonwealth, I believe we have both a constitutional and moral responsibility to ensure that the drinking water consumed by our fellow citizens is safe. Please join me in support of this important legislation.
