Subject: | Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) in Cosmetics and Textiles |
Despite PFAS being a health hazard, they are included in many products people use daily, like cosmetics and textiles. Exposure to PFAS has been shown to cause increased cholesterol levels, decreased vaccine responses in children, impacts on liver enzymes, increased blood pressure in women, decreased birth weight in infants, and increased risks of kidney and testicular cancer. To address the troubling prevalence of PFAS in some of the items we use every day, I will be introducing legislation that would prohibit the use of PFAS in cosmetics and textile products. To give manufacturers time to adjust to this change, the prohibition would not go into effect until January 1, 2025; the date would be extended to January 1, 2028, for certain products. Under this legislation, a manufacturer would be required to provide a certificate of compliance to persons offering cosmetics or textile products for sale. There would be indemnification for those offering products for sale who act in good faith upon the provided certificate of compliance. Removing dangers to our health will help to ensure a safe future for all Pennsylvanians. Please join me in this effort to eliminate dangerous contaminants from our daily lives. |
