| Through local school boards, our tax dollars go toward making tuition payments for Pennsylvania’s many charter schools. When handling our money, it is important that school boards are being transparent and held accountable for the tax dollars they spend – we expect that for any expenditure of public funds, for any level of government. School boards are responsible for writing that check, making sure they can pay for it, and justifying their expenditures to their voters. But despite this responsibility, they often have little to no knowledge of what is happening inside the charter schools they’re funding, and how that taxpayer money is being spent. Every dollar of taxpayer money should be accountable to an entity elected by those taxpayers. Based on that principle, my bill would ensure that accountability by requiring every charter school board of trustees to have a member appointed by the local authorizing school board, or each of the authorizing school boards in the case of a regional charter school. School boards already have oversight and representation in other parts of our public education system, including intermediate units and career and technology centers. Taxpayers deserve to know that their tax dollars are being spent properly. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to ensure that a representative from an elected body has oversight over how money is being spent in our publicly funded charter schools.
