Subject: | Agriculture Hauling Permits |
In the near future, I plan on introducing legislation that will allow the owners of specialized farm equipment to obtain a yearly permit for the movement of equipment and eliminate the need of a State Police escort for the movement. Currently, farmers are required to obtain a per-movement permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. These permits are not friendly to agriculture. Quite frequently, these farmers are moving custom equipment at critical points of the year (planting and harvest season) and farmers are moving equipment to multiple fields in a short window of time. In addition, each movement requires State Police to escort this equipment on every movement—at a time when State Police are already stretched too thin. This legislation would create a yearly permit that would eliminate the need for a State Police escort and instead allow for the use of a pilot vehicle. In addition, the yearly permit would allow a farming vehicle to be moved within 50 miles from the place of origin as show on the permit. This equipment would not be allowed to move on interstate highways. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this common-sense legislation. |
