MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 30, 2022 10:50 AM
From: Representative Darisha K. Parker
To: All House members
Subject: Victim Compensation Property Damage

The Victim Compensation Program was established to financially assist crime victims through financial compensation in order to ease the emotional and physical impact of a crime. However, victims of property damage are not eligible to receive compensation. This places undue financial strain on property damage victims as they are responsible for paying for damages.

For this reason, I will be introducing legislation that would make property damage victims eligible for compensation. This legislation would apply to real and rental property, as well as vehicular property. Additionally, victims could be compensated up to the total cost of damages.

It is vital that victims of property damage are protected and are afforded financial assistance under the Victim Compensation Program. It is my hope that you will join me in safeguarding victims’ rights through providing them compensation.

Introduced as HB1180
