| In order to expand opportunities for all Pennsylvania students and encourage more school districts to offer AP courses to students, I plan to introduce legislation to expand access to advanced placement (AP) courses in the core academic areas (mathematics, English language arts, science, social science and computer science). Specifically, this bill will create the Advanced Placement Teacher Training Program to train teachers in an eligible school entity to teach advanced placement courses in the core academic areas. An eligible school entity is a school that does not or will not have more than one AP course in each of the core academic areas. An investment in AP offers cost-savings to taxpayers, families, and students. In May 2020, Pennsylvania public and private high school students took a total of 93,294 AP Exams that resulted in scores of 3, 4, or 5. Based on the potential to earn 3 college credit hours for each AP Exam score of 3 or higher, this represents an estimated 279,882 college credit hours. At an average tuition of $499.67 per credit hour, the total potential tuition cost savings for Pennsylvania students and families is $139,848,639. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to provide all PA students with access to AP courses in mathematics, English language arts, science, social science and computer science and raise the bar in PA for students and schools in their AP course offerings. |
