Subject: | Expungement of Suspension from Student Disciplinary Records |
In 2018, Unionville-Chadds Ford School District became the first district in the state to implement a policy that allowed for schools to expunge suspensions from the disciplinary record of a student who is a first offender. With many universities and colleges still asking applicants about their disciplinary history in school, this policy allows students to apply to post-secondary education institutions without fear that they will receive an automatic rejection due to a mistake they made when they were younger. In addition, this policy promotes and supports efforts that move toward a system of evidence-based alternatives to minimize the use of exclusionary discipline for children, which has been shown to decrease student success and academic performance. It is time that Pennsylvania follows the lead of Unionville-Chadds Ford School District and ensures that students across the state can have successful futures. That is why I am reintroducing legislation that would allow school districts to expunge suspensions from a student’s disciplinary record, as determined by each individual school district. This legislation would level the playing field for students and give them each an equal opportunity to graduate with a clean slate. All students deserve a second chance that can open the door to a lifetime of success for them. I hope you will join me in supporting this important legislation that will help students and improve school policies around this issue. |
