Subject:	Portable Airway Clearance Device

I have been contacted by a constituent who lost his granddaughter, age 8, when she had a choking spell in school after eating a hot dog. The Heimlich maneuver and other physical efforts were unsuccessful in addressing the tragic ordeal. The grandfather has contacted me to propose the attached legislation that would require public and private school districts to have available a device that has proven successful in removing airway obstructions. These devices have reportedly been used over 300 times without any failure. These devices typically cost about $70. Comparable legislation is now being considered in New Jersey, New York and Wisconsin. In 2018, 1,430 children died due to choking incidents. In the United States, annual deaths from choking amount to approximately 5,000 people per year. Your consideration and hopeful co-sponsorship of this legislation may help to save a life.
