Subject: Sunday Vehicle Sales

If you head to a car dealership on a Sunday, hoping to come home with a new car, you’re out of luck. Less than half of states still prohibit Sunday sales of vehicles by licensed dealers, and Pennsylvania is one of them. This is one of Pennsylvania’s few remaining “blue laws,” a series of laws prohibiting various activities on Sundays. Many of these laws are viewed as outdated, and Pennsylvania has eliminated several over the past few years. Most recently, in 2016, Pennsylvania lifted Sunday sales restrictions at Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores.

Most of Pennsylvania’s neighbors allow Sunday vehicle sales at car dealerships. By prohibiting these sales, we lose out on transactions to bordering states and put our Commonwealth at a competitive disadvantage. For this reason, I am re-introducing former HB 1443 of the 2019-2020 Legislative Session, which permits normal vehicle business dealers to sell motor vehicles on Sunday. These businesses would also be permitted to stay open on Sundays, and to finalize sales contracts on Sundays.

I hope you will join me in supporting legislation that will keep Pennsylvania’s car dealerships competitive with those in other states and boost economic activity.

Introduced as HB2622
