Subject: | Defining Dispatchers as First Responders |
A good 911 dispatcher saves lives. They are typically our first, first responders. Dispatchers (also known as telecommunicators) provide critical information to emergency units enroute to a scene, during the incident, and often by coordinating resources after the incident has been brought under control. They are essential first responders, and yet they are not recognized as such in law. Our bill would change this. This bill creates a universal definition for our dispatchers and codifies what emergency responders already know, that dispatchers are first responders. Correcting this shortcoming is a positive step forward to ensuring that these dedicated professionals are properly identified and recognized for their critical work. The bill also adds clarifying definitional language in support of fire fighters. Please join us in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. |
