MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 23, 2022 10:08 AM
From: Representative Jim Marshall
To: All House members
Subject: Illegible Registration Plates

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that will require illegible vehicle registration plates that were issued within the last 10 years to be replaced.  PennDOT shall replace these plates at no cost to the registrant, and shall be the same type of plate as originally issued (unless that plate has been discontinued).

Older registration plates or plates that may have a manufacturing defect, tend to become illegible quickly.  This creates safety concerns for law enforcement and issues with plate reading technology such as what the Turnpike uses for tolling.  This change in statute will therefore ensure that all vehicles on our roadways are clearly and safely identifiable.

Please join me in supporting this important legislation.

Introduced as HB2517
