Subject: | Designating May 2022 as “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month” |
In January of this year, a quarter of the American people and over twenty percent of Pennsylvania residents self-identified as being “physically inactive,” a term used to describe individuals who do not participate in physical activity of any kind outside of their regular job. This inactivity can lead to high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which can cause heart disease, strokes, and other serious health conditions. It is for this reason that I plan to introduce a concurrent resolution to designate May 2022 as “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month” to remind all residents to stay physically active and to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Increasing physical activity can be as simple as choosing to take the stairs rather than an elevator, and resources such as activity planners can assist a person with long-term plans to maintain or reduce weight. The benefits of being physically active are numerous, and a person can start at any age in their life. Our Commonwealth has supported opportunities to increase physical activity in the past, and it is time we continue that support. By designating May as “National Physical Fitness and Sports Month,” we empower our communities to take advantage of the tools readily available for them to stay fit. Please consider co-sponsoring this resolution. |
