MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 18, 2022 10:00 AM
From: Representative Peter Schweyer
To: All House members
Subject: Jobs, Energy Independence and Enhanced Consumer Choice

Although Pennsylvanian consumers have had the option to shop for electric generation for more than a decade, the fact is that few customers actually shop for their energy supplier. Instead, they overwhelmingly rely on their Electric Distribution Company (EDCs) to provide them with default service that is a mix of sources of electricity. And while this is a fine option for many, customers who are unaware or confused by the PA electric marketplace do not have an obvious opportunity to purchase more sustainable energy options.

My legislation is simple: it would allow EDCs to offer a second default service plan that would feature exclusively carbon-free sources of energy including nuclear, solar, hydropower and wind generated electricity. This bill will protect the thousands of jobs in the nuclear industry while aiding in the development of other forms of Pennsylvanian-made electricity.

Again, this is not a mandate as EDCs could opt not to provide the second default service nor would this replace the traditional default service option for consumers.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
