Subject: | Insurance Fairness for Amputees Act |
Prosthetic limbs are crucial for amputees to live and work with as little inconvenience as possible. Unfortunately, many insurance plans only cover one prosthetic limb per lifetime, meaning those who may lose multiple limbs in a catastrophic accident, or grow out of a prosthetic limb, could be on the hook for thousands of dollars. Despite doing the same job as internal prosthetics like artificial hips, only external prosthetics like replacement legs are subject to these insurance caps. My legislation will rectify this issue by requiring insurers cover the purchase, fitting, repair, and maintenance of prosthetic limbs that are prescribed by licensed healthcare professionals. Insurers will still have the right to require prosthetics are rendered by designated providers as they do in other healthcare procedures. This is companion legislation to Senator Mensch’s Senate Bill 289. I urge you to join me in co-sponsoring this bill to make our state a better place for amputees. |
