| Too often, online contracts can automatically renew without the subscriber being notified or even aware. This can lead to consumers paying for a subscription they no longer want or might not remember they have. To make matters worse, some subscription services require consumers to jump through hoops just to cancel their subscription, such as forcing them to call or speak to an online representative before they can end the service. Subscriptions should be transparent and easy to understand. Consumers should be made aware of their active subscriptions and be able to cancel them as easily as they can begin a subscription. That is why I am introducing legislation that would amend the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Act to require companies to provide a notification before each automatic renewal, to be transparent about renewal terms, and to allow subscribers to cancel their subscription services exclusively online if they initially subscribed over the Internet. It is time we provided greater transparency to consumers regarding their subscription services and empowered them to cancel subscriptions they no longer want with limited hassle.
