MEMORANDUM

Subject: Prohibiting Remote Stalking

Technology is ever-changing.  As items evolve and are outsourced to consumers, they seek to be convenient and safe until they aren’t.  For example, one of Apple’s newest items that were announced at its spring launch event on April 20, 2021 was AirTags.  AirTags are intended to help you find items that you have misplaced, such as your keys, wallet or bookbag.

While these small but mighty devices make our lives more convenient by utilizing a tool called precision finding, it is possible that these can be used for ulterior motives.

Lately, I have seen an influx of articles stating that predators are placing an AirTag onto victims’ vehicles to track their location.  One fix that Apple proposed is implementing a notification system that would alert you if an AirTag other than your own is detected near you (iPhone users).  The second solution that Apple has proposed is creating an Android friendly application that would also alert you (available through the Google Play Store).

While these proposed solutions are extremely helpful, I am proposing legislation that would prohibit people from using these devices outside of its intended use.  I ask for your support in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
