Subject: | Hurricane Ida Assistance |
In early September, Hurricane Ida brought destructive winds, several tornadoes and heavy rain to Pennsylvania, resulting in catastrophic flooding throughout the commonwealth. The damage done to communities remains extensive. Because of this historic storm, many Pennsylvanians have been displaced from their homes and are in desperate need of temporary housing and repairs. According to PEMA, remnants of Ida caused more than $117 million in public infrastructure damage across the state. Many local businesses and non-profit organizations, still reeling from the last year and a half, experienced extensive damage and were forced to close or limit services. It is of paramount importance that we provide support to the individuals, Main Street businesses and nonprofits impacted. The need for assistance is particularly dire given the devastating impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has already had on our communities. To address these concerns, we are introducing two pieces of legislation. The first bill will establish a program to provide aid for temporary housing, home repairs and other disaster- related expenses to individuals. We must act quickly to provide critical aid to Pennsylvanians who are suffering. The second bill will establish a program to provide short-term, immediate rent and mortgage reimbursement to eligible businesses and nonprofits that suffered physical damage caused by Ida. Together we can ensure that these businesses and nonprofits have a path forward as Pennsylvanians continue to recover. This package of bills is needed today. Please join us in co-sponsoring so we can provide vital support to our constituents. |
