Subject: | Suspending medical licenses for theft of controlled substances |
In the near future, I intend to legislation which would increase penalties for medical professionals who are convicted of theft of a controlled substance. Doctors and nurses are some of the most trusted, hard-working professionals in our society. We trust them with our health, and the health of our loved ones. But that trust can be tarnished by those individuals who steal narcotics and other controlled substances as a result of addiction or abuse. Patients must be protected from those individuals who engage in such illegal behavior. To address this, I will be introducing a package of bills to require the state boards of medicine, osteopathic medicine, and nursing to revoke the license of individuals convicted of acquiring, obtaining, or possessing a controlled substance by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception, or subterfuge, for a period of 10 years. Please join me in co-sponsoring this consumer protection package. |
