MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 30, 2021 02:03 PM
From: Representative Joe Ciresi
To: All House members
Subject: Grants for School PPE & Safe In-Person Instruction

While online learning has been a useful tool during the COVID-19 pandemic, we know it is not ideal and that the isolation that accompanies it can have very real impacts on our students. Most students learn better when they are back in schools and interacting with their peers, which is why it’s important for us to take action to give our children the best chance of having a safe, in-person school year.

That is why I am introducing legislation to create grants for the 2021-2022 school year similar to those in Act 30 of 2020, which only applied to the 2020-2021 school year. My bill would help both public and nonpublic schools purchase additional personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleaning and sanitizing supplies, and to allow them to make modifications necessary to ensure appropriate social distancing, in the current school year. The COVID-19 pandemic has already taken so much from so many, and we should make sure that we do not let it take even more from our children. Education is one of the most valuable gifts we can provide the next generations, and it should be protected. Supporting our schools in that effort is our responsibility.

When children can go to school, their parents are able to work, and we all benefit. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to ensure our schools can provide a safe in-person learning environment for our children.
