Subject: | Protecting Mothers Through Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Screenings |
Peripartum cardiomyopathy, or PPCM, is a rare form of heart failure that occurs in pregnant individuals during the last month of pregnancy up to five months after giving birth. When not properly diagnosed, this rare condition can potentially become lethal. Complicating matters, the condition may be difficult to diagnose as its symptoms can mimic those of third trimester pregnancy. They include fatigue, heart palpitations, increased nighttime urination, shortness of breath, swelling of the ankles, swollen neck veins, and low blood pressure. This is why I plan to introduce legislation that would require health insurance carriers to cover all known diagnostic procedures used for screening PPCM. When health care providers are able to utilize every resource available – without hesitation or worry for cost-related insurance barriers – patients’ lives are made safer, and families’ wellbeing are safeguarded. This small gesture can have ripple effects that are difficult to quantify. When a family loses its mother at such a young age and critical juncture, the foundational loss can be devastating beyond repair. Please join me in protecting the health of Pennsylvania mothers and families by supporting this legislation. Thank you. |
