Subject: | Digital Vehicle Registration Cards |
It is now possible to manage various things in our lives digitally – check deposits, credit card transactions, money transfers, voter registration. But, we are still required to maintain a paper copy of vehicle registration, an inefficient practice in the modern day. That is why I am reintroducing House Bill 496 from the 2019-2020 legislative session, which will allow drivers to show proof of their vehicle registration through electronic means. Paper registration documents are often stored in crowded glove compartments where nervous drivers struggle to find them when pulled over by law enforcement. Digital vehicle registration cards will make this process faster and easier for drivers and police officers alike. My legislation would permit motorists to carry either a digital or paper copy of their vehicle registration card, providing drivers the freedom to choose the method that works best for them. Further, it stipulates that individuals who elect to show digital proof of registration on an electronic device are not presumed to be consenting to a search of that device, thereby protecting the privacy of drivers. Numerous other states have already enacted this measure and have seen its success. Join me in increasing efficiency for drivers by co-sponsoring this commonsense legislation. |
