MEMORANDUM

Subject: Umemployment Compensation Service Center Staff Returning to Work in Office

In the very near future, I plan to introduce legislation requiring Unemployment Compensation (UC) Service Center staff to return to work in the office where they can better perform their duties and provide claimants with the best possible service.

Circumstances have dramatically changed since the outset of the pandemic, yet UC Service Center staff continue to work from home. In February, the L&I committee heard testimony from a UC examiner that he is less efficient working from home. Across the state, Private sector employers and employees alike have adapted to safely working in-person, and now more and more Pennsylvanians are vaccinated or have developed natural immunity to COVID-19. The time is long overdue to require these valuable Commonwealth employees to return to their workplace.

My legislation would also require CareerLink Centers to offer in-person services, including access to the direct phone lines to UC Service Centers, which were commonly utilized by the public before the pandemic. While helping constituents resolve issues with their UC claims remains a top priority, Pennsylvanians desperately need to get back to work. In-person services at CareerLink Centers need to be available to help get Pennsylvanians back to work.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
