MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 19, 2021 11:06 AM
From: Representative Jake Wheatley, Jr.
To: All House members
Subject: Public Official Drug Screening

As elected officials, we understand the weight of the votes we take and even the positions we stand behind. They matter because they have real effects on the people who elect us to public office. I believe we must therefore hold ourselves to a higher standard, particularly when it comes to ethics and employment requirements.

My proposal would require candidates to submit to drug testing and submit a drug screening certificate of compliance with their nominating petitions to be deemed eligible for the ballot. In order to preserve the public trust and to truly serve the best interests of our constituents, we should lead by example and set the standard of integrity. As such, it is only fair that candidates for state and local office submit to drug screening prior to holding office.

Please join me in sponsoring this important legislation.
