Subject: | Urging the U.S. Senate to Pass the For the People Act |
Many years ago, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, President Abraham Lincoln solemnly declared “that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” Government “by the people” is the crucial part of this phrase, and in America the people govern with the ballot box. Pennsylvania just enjoyed record voter turnout. This should be a cause for celebration and a reminder that our government belongs to the people. Sadly, some politicians in states across the nation would like to restrict access to the ballot box. In so doing, they undermine Lincoln’s understanding of government by the people. National voting standards are critical to preventing this disenfranchisement and will ensure that the fundamental right to vote is guaranteed to every citizen. Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives took action towards enacting such standards by passing the For the People Act, which would streamline voter registration, promote early voting, reform campaign finance, and support election security. I believe these reforms will help more Pennsylvanians access the ballot box and ensure that we remain a government of the people. To that end, I will be introducing a resolution urging the U.S. Senate to pass the For the People Act. I hope that you will join me in supporting this resolution. |
