Subject: | Sale of Confiscated Firearms to Improve Funding for Sheriff Departments (Former House Bill 480) |
I plan to re-introduce legislation to help improve funding for county sheriff departments. This legislation would empower local Sheriff Departments, at their discretion, sell any confiscated firearm to a federally licensed firearm dealer or hold a public auction for the firearms. To ensure the safety of law enforcement and our community any firearm purchased at public auction, under this legislation, will be subject to a background check. Should anyone who successfully purchases a firearm at a public auction held by a Sheriff’s Department that individual will not be refunded for the cost of the background check or purchase. The proceeds of the sale to a federally licensed firearm dealer or at auction will be used to cover personnel, equipment or training costs of the department. Nothing in this legislation requires an agency to sell the firearm as they would be empowered to either re-purpose the firearm for departmental use or relinquish the firearm to federal authorities. Please join me and co-sponsor this legislation to improve funding for our local sheriff departments. |
