MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 25, 2021 01:29 PM
From: Representative Morgan Cephas and Rep. Peter Schweyer, Rep. Jordan A. Harris
To: All House members
Subject: Bridging the digital divide for students without access

During a public health emergency such as the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, one of the best things we can do for our students to protect their health is to require them to stay home. However, this can be detrimental to their education. While school buildings are closed, students are expected to keep up with their work. Technology has shown to be one of the best ways to connect teachers to students but unfortunately not everyone has that access readily available to them.

To allow our students to continue their education during COVID-19, we will be re-introducing legislation to allocate grant moneys to school districts to provide or expand access to technology and technological equipment for students who do not have the means to purchase such items or who do not have access to the Internet at home. New Jersey has approved a similar bill that allows school districts to purchase technology including laptops, tablets, and internet hotspots for students.

Please join us in co-sponsoring legislation to provide for our students.
