MEMORANDUM

Subject: Pennsylvania Statewide Mask Requirement

As the COVID-19 pandemic surges through our neighborhoods and continues to exhaust state and local resources, the sinking feeling of hopelessness is undeniable for many of us. We must act now to implement one of the most effective strategies at slowing its spread -- a statewide mask requirement in all public spaces.

We must act, for the essential workers and caregivers who are risking their health and safety to keep our communities safe. For the small business owners and local economies who are being hurt by the impact of this virus. For the many families managing the mounting pressure to fend off a utility shut-off or eviction or food shortage during these winter months; a breaking point is fast-approaching.

Numerous medical reports and public health experts have pointed to the effectiveness of masks to both the wearer and people in the wearer’s proximity. Just under 10,000 Pennsylvania residents have succumbed to this deadly virus so far. What better way to honor those we lost, than to wear a mask and keep others safe?

It is simply impossible to revive our economy and get our neighborhoods moving until we get control of this virus. We have no choice but to move forward with a state-wide mask requirement in all public spaces and resource non-law enforcement entities that are best equipped to enforce it. This legislation would seek to do that.

Please join me in supporting this legislation to save Pennsylvanian lives and take action to slow the spread of this lethal virus.
