MEMORANDUM

Subject: National Adoption Day - November 23, 2020

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution designating November 23, 2020 as “National Adoption Day” in Pennsylvania.

Adoption provides a child with a lifetime connection to a family, profoundly changing the course of that child’s life by providing stability, security, love and opportunity.

National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the more than 125,000 children across the United States who are in foster care and waiting to be adopted. This annual, one-day event, celebrated on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, has made the dreams of thousands of children come true by working with policymakers, practitioners and advocates to finalize adoptions, and create and celebrate adoptive families.

Since its inception in 2000, National Adoption Day has helped nearly 75,000 children in the United States move from foster care to adoption.

Here in Pennsylvania, approximately 2,500 children in Pennsylvania are currently waiting to be adopted. The average wait for a child in foster care to be adopted is three years. Unfortunately, more than 20,000 children across the United States age out of the foster care system every year with no family or permanent home.
This resolution serves to raise awareness about National Adoption Day and serves to recognize the collaboration and commitment of both public and private adoption agencies in dedication to the needs of children throughout this Commonwealth and this nation.

I respectfully ask you to please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
