MEMORANDUM

Posted: July 24, 2020 12:46 PM
From: Representative Brad Roae
To: All House members
Subject: Making Life-Sustaining Prescriptions Affordable

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation to address the rising cost of pharmaceutical medications for the constituents of Pennsylvania.

This winter, the House Health Committee held a hearing to discuss the causes behind the rising cost of pharmaceutical medications in the Commonwealth.  Routinely, we have heard that individuals struggle to pay for the cost of life-sustaining medications including insulin and epinephrine especially prior to meeting the deductible in a high-deductible health insurance plan.  Under my proposed legislation, these medications would be considered similar to preventative care and the patient would not need to meet his or her deductible prior to having health insurance cover the cost of the medication.

This necessary legislation would bring immediate relief to those constituents who struggle every month to afford medications.  Additionally, the cost-savings for individuals who avoid additional health care services as a result of being compliant with their medication are anticipated to offset any minor cost to health insurance plans.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this necessary legislation.
