Subject: | Legal Aid for Tenants Facing Eviction |
When it comes to eviction proceedings, the cards are often stacked against the tenant. Nationwide, almost 90% of landlords and property managers have access to legal representation while just 10% of tenants do. This all but guarantees a loss in court for indigent tentants and therefore, a loss of their home. It is estimated that between 50% and 75% of tenants without legal representation ended up losing their case and are evicted from their homes. For this reason, we plan on introducing a bill that would provide legal representation to low-income tenants facing an eviction hearing. This bill is a matter of fairness. With quality representation, we can ensure that seniors and families have a basic level of protection and legal options when facing eviction. It is crucial for us to keep as many people in their homes as possible, especially now amidst a global pandemic like COVID-19. Please consider co-sponsoring this important legislation to protect our neighbors who are experiencing difficult times. |
