Session of 2019 - 2020 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 5, 2020 08:33 AM
From: Representative Joseph A. Petrarca
To: All House members
Subject: A resolution urging the Governor to classify child welfare workers and service providers as "Level 1 emergency responders"

The current pandemic caused by the new novel virus, COVID 19, has had a significant impact on child serving systems, especially child welfare.  In a system that requires face-to-face interaction with children, youth, and families by county child welfare agencies, providers and the courts, the required stay-at-home orders have suspended multiple layers of the system and drastically changed practices.

This new normal has made it evident that child welfare workers and service providers working with children, youth and families are critical and essential employees and play a vital role in assisting child welfare and juvenile justice agencies in maintaining the safety and well being of our children.  Child welfare staff are on the front lines of this pandemic, but as we have heard some may not have access to equipment that will help them do this critical work more safely.

For this and many other reasons, I urge my colleagues to join me in co-sponsoring this resolution so that these front line workers can have increased access to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that will allow them to do their work as safely as possible and help and protect one of our most vulnerable populations.
