Subject: | Sept 2020 as Suicide Prevention Month/Sept 10, 2020 as Suicide Prevention Day |
I plan to re-introduce a resolution naming September 2020 “Suicide Prevention Month” and September 10, 2020 as “Suicide Prevention Day” in Pennsylvania. Each year, more than 48,000 Americans die by suicide. The World Health Organization states that 800,000 individuals die annually from suicide, which is one person every 40 seconds! More than 20 individuals have attempted suicide for every individual who has died by suicide. Suicide is a major, preventable cause of premature death which is influenced by psychosocial, cultural, and environmental risk factors that can be prevented through worldwide responses that address these main risk factors. There is strong evidence that adequate prevention can reduce suicide rates. Through this legislation, I believe that we can raise awareness that suicide is preventable, improve education about suicide, spread information about suicide awareness, and decrease stigmatization regarding suicide. Please join me by becoming a cosponsor of this important resolution. |
