MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28, 2020)

Poor menstrual hygiene impacts millions of women and girls globally, often resulting in missed educational opportunities and prevents them from reaching their full potential. The lack of access to menstrual hygiene products affects 1 in 5 American women and girls.

“Menstrual Hygiene Day” intends to educate and provide a platform that raises awareness and changes negative social norms around menstrual health management. Menstruation is an issue that impacts all of us, including men. It is an issue of gender equality, inclusion, human dignity, and public health. Proper education, access to hygiene products, and the removal of dated social stigma surrounding menstruation is needed in order for women and girls to reach their goals.  Therefore, I plan to introduce a resolution designating May 28, 2020, as “Menstrual Hygiene Day” in Pennsylvania.

With the health and safety of Pennsylvanians in mind, it is imperative that we take the time to foster more awareness to address this issue across this Commonwealth. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
