Subject: | Recognizing November 19, 2020, as “The Great American Smokeout Day” |
Every year, over 480,000 Americans die as a result of exposure to firsthand or secondhand cigarette smoke. Furthermore, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States and is known to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as various cancers and lung diseases. On the third Thursday of November each year, the American Cancer Society hosts “The Great American Smokeout Day,” which is used to spread awareness about the risks of tobacco use as well as to encourage tobacco users to quit. For this reason, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing November 19, 2020, as “The Great American Smokeout Day” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in protecting Pennsylvanians from the risk of disease and death associated with tobacco use. |
