|It is estimated that 40 million Americans have communication disorders, with 36 million Americans having some degree of hearing loss. Problems with hearing, balance, voice, speech or language can impact a person’s physical and emotional health, while also compromising their social, educational, vocational and recreational aspects of life.
Founded in 1927 by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), “Better Hearing and Speech Month” raises awareness of communication disorders and treatments that are available to improve one’s quality of life. In honor of the dedication that ASHA and its network of audiologists and speech-language pathologists has shown in educating the public on hearing and speech problems, I am introducing a resolution recognizing the month of May 2020 as “Better Hearing and Speech Month” in Pennsylvania.
Too often our ability to speak, hear, and be heard is taken for granted. Please join me in highlighting the importance of early detection and intervention in the treatment of hearing and speech disorders by supporting this resolution.
