| Subject: | Rainforest Awareness Month – May 2020 |
| Rainforests are vital to the sustainability of life on Earth. While rainforests cover only six percent of our planet’s surface area, they contain approximately half of all plant and animal life, and about 50 million Indigenous people reside in them. Rainforests also help to regulate temperature and weather patterns, absorb harmful carbon dioxide, and supply roughly 20 percent of the oxygen we breathe and water we drink. Despite this, nearly two-thirds of all tropical rainforest coverage and half of temperate rainforest coverage on Earth has been destroyed, threatening the health of our planet. Deforestation is responsible for 15 percent of carbon dioxide emissions, which is more than every car in the United States and China combined. Rainforest Foundation US annually recognizes May as “Rainforest Awareness Month.” To join this organization in bringing awareness to the importance of protecting our planet’s rainforests, I plan to introduce a resolution designating May 2020 as “Rainforest Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in support of this important measure. |
