MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 29, 2020 04:28 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Establishing a Registry of Caregivers that abuse individuals with disabilities or special needs

I plan to introduce legislation that would establish a registry of caregivers or former caregivers who have been charged with abusing and/or neglecting individuals with a disability or special needs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

There are currently 26 states that have created this registry to protect people with disabilities. This registry would track caregivers that have been found to mentally, financially, physically, and emotionally abuse their assigned client. By documenting the perpetrators of abuse and neglect through this system, we can limit the perpetrator’s accessibility to other individuals with disabilities and special needs in our community. Ultimately, it is our responsibility to protect the most vulnerable members of our population and ensure that their caregivers are going to help and not harm them.

Please sign on as a co-sponsor to protect individuals with disabilities and special needs from abuse and neglect by their caregivers.
