MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 28, 2020 03:17 PM
From: Representative Martina A. White
To: All House members
Subject: Mandatory minimum for crimes committed with illegal firearms

In the near future, I intend to introduce legislation that will amend Title 42, Section 9712.2 to require the courts to impose a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years for any defendant convicted of committing an offense while possessing an illegal firearm. As gun violence continues to terrorize our communities, I believe it is necessary to focus resources and policing efforts on those criminals that utilize firearms, procured unlawfully, in the perpetration of criminal acts.

Significantly, this legislation does not adversely impact the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens as it only seeks to penalize the possession of an illegal firearm during the commission of another crime.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to better protect and serve our Commonwealth residents.

Introduced as HB2566
