Subject: | Designating February 2020 as National Cancer Prevention Month in Pennsylvania |
Despite growing public awareness regarding cancer prevention and early detection, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2020, it is estimated that there will be 80,240 new cancer cases and 27,860 cancer deaths in Pennsylvania. With these individuals in mind, it is imperative that we take the time to foster a greater discussion about cancer prevention strategies, treatment options, and screening opportunities. In the last decade, research progress has been a catalyst for new treatment therapies that can kill the deadliest types of cancer, as well as expand on lifestyle changes one can make to reduce risk factors. Therefore, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of February 2020 as “National Cancer Prevention Month.” As stewards of public health and safety, it is my hope that you will join me in this collective effort to further promote and protect the health and well-being of Pennsylvanians. Your consideration is greatly appreciated. |
