Subject: | Prescription Drug Disposal - Hospice Service |
In order to restrict unused prescription drugs from being abused or misused, I plan to sponsor legislation would enact guidelines regarding appropriate prescription drug disposal for health care facilities licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. This legislation would provide a written policy and procedure for hospice service providers to properly dispose of a patient’s unused and controlled substance prescription drugs. Designated health care professional employees would receive training on how to handle this classification of prescriptions, and would receive authorization to dispose of the patient’s prescriptions if the drug has expired, if there are written instructions from the physician that the patient should no longer take the prescription, or if the patient has died. The determined approach for disposal would be discussed with the patient and their family in a concise and easily understood manner. In addition, the recourse would be documented and filed in accordance with all state and federal laws. I kindly ask for your support of properly disposing prescription drugs and clearly documenting the responding procedures to protect our surrounding community. |
