Subject: | Designating January 26, 2020, as “Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania |
Kawasaki disease is a serious illness that primarily affects young children and is characterized by the inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body, fever and rash. Approximately 75% of Kawasaki disease patients are under five years of age, and, if left untreated, affected children are at risk of developing heart disease. Unfortunately, the precise cause of Kawasaki disease is unknown, and sensitive testing options are limited. This debilitating disease often goes undiagnosed due to lack of awareness of the disease among the public and health care professionals. It is crucial that more people be informed of this severe condition, as early treatment following the appearance of symptoms is imperative in reducing the likelihood of associated lifelong complications. It is for these reasons that I am introducing a resolution designating January 26, 2020, as “Kawasaki Disease Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in supporting this resolution in an effort to recognize the importance of properly diagnosing and treating cases of Kawasaki disease. |
