Subject: | Resolution: Beseeching POTUS and U.S. Congress to award the Congressional Gold Medal collectively to U.S. Army Rangers Of WWII |
Being an Army Ranger is an honor that I took very seriously; therefore, I will be introducing a resolution to implore Congress and the President to enact S. 1757 or similar legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal, collectively, to the United States Army Rangers Veterans of World War II in recognition of their extraordinary service. The 1st Ranger Battalion was formed at the onset of the United States’ involvement in World War II. Modeled after British Commandos, the Army Rangers were and still are an elite unit. Of the 15 million soldiers who served in the armed forces in World War II, only 3,000 were Rangers. There were six Ranger Battalions in World War II, each comprised of approximately 500 men, and all of which were strictly volunteer. At least 48 World War II Rangers were from the Commonwealth, 33 of which remained overseas interred in American battlefield cemeteries. Three Rangers in D Company, 2nd Battalion were from Altoona and two of the three climbed the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc. One of the two successfully destroyed five of six German long-range artillery pieces at Point de Hoc. Today, there are 41 known World War II Rangers alive nationwide. It is imperative that we show gratitude and give these men the honor and recognition that they deserve. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution. |
