Subject: | Expungement of Suspension from Student Disciplinary Records |
In the near future, I plan on re-introducing legislation that would amend the Public School Code to allow school districts the ability to expunge suspensions from student disciplinary records, as determined by the individual school district. The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District made changes to their suspension policy after the suspension of approximately 20 students in September of 2017. Due to backlash from the community, the Unionville-Chadds Ford school board has since changed their policy to allow a rescission petition process for first offenders, and I believe Pennsylvania should follow their lead. The noted success of the Unionville-Chaddsford School District shows us that the time is now, to promote and support efforts that move toward a system of evidence based alternatives to minimize the use of exclusionary discipline while working to maximize our children’s school-based educational and learning experiences for a successful future. My proposal gives students the chance to apply to the post-secondary institution of their choice without the fear of rejection based on a minor infraction committed in their youth. I believe this legislation will level the playing field for all students and give them each an equal opportunity to graduate with a clean slate and a second chance. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
