MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 9, 2019 10:48 AM
From: Representative Elizabeth Fiedler and Rep. Liz Hanbidge
To: All House members
Subject: No Pelvic Exams Without Consent

Right now, patients who walk into the hospital for a procedure, may not be aware of what happens while they are under anesthesia. As was recently reported, currently medical students may perform a pelvic exam on a female patient who is under anesthesia for a procedure. The female patient often has not given consent and may be entirely unaware of what is being done to her body while she is under anesthesia. We must protect patients' rights. I plan to introduce legislation to ensure medical schools, teaching hospitals, and medical institutions receive patient consent for all procedures and exams performed under anesthesia by medical students or for training purposes.

This medical problem was brought to my attention by a concerned constituent who worried what had been done to her body while she was under anesthesia for a different surgery.

Please consider supporting patients by cosponsoring this legislation.

Introduced as HB2246
