Subject: | Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Awareness Week |
In the near future, as Co-Chair of the House Diabetes Caucus, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the week of November 10-16, 2019, as Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Awareness Week in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. By way of background, the House Diabetes Caucus seeks to bring attention to the public health issue that is diabetes, educate members and the public on complications associated with the disease and promote a healthy lifestyle for all Pennsylvanians. Further, the House Diabetes Caucus holds periodic briefings with organizations knowledgeable about the disease to provide updates about medical advancements to treatment and patient success stories. It is important to note: Approximately 1.4 million Pennsylvanians have been diagnosed with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes represents an estimated 90-95 percent of all diagnosed adult diabetes cases in the United States. People with Type 2 diabetes are at two to four times greater risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Sadly, two out of three deaths of people with Type 2 diabetes are attributed to cardiovascular disease. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to raise awareness of the connection between diabetes and cardiovascular disease. |
